Sonthofen - Kühtaitour

Route description / Tour report

Wednesday, 06.09.06: Fantastic weather! So my wife and I got on our bikes again and started it! We packed breakfast beforehand to enjoy the landscape and the coffee at a nice place on the way.

First we drove via Hindelang up to Oberjoch (1178 m). Here the dense traffic already started, which should accompany us later on into the Tannheimer-Tal. Apparently, the holiday season is not over yet and many others use the nice weather for an excursion. So we first stopped at Schattwald and had breakfast. It was right next to the main road, but a table and a bank just laughed at us. We went on through the valley to the Gaichtpass (1093 m). Then - must be easy - to the Hahntennjoch (1903 m). The Hahntennjoch is still a must for all motorcyclists - wonderful curves, hardly any cars and beautiful landscape. Over the pass we went to Imst. From there we continued in the direction of Kühtai. But not over the turnoff to the Ötztal, but a short distance further on via Haimingerberg. Here you have a fantastic view into the valley (see photo) - short stop obligatory! Down to the Kühtai line we were slowed down by a construction site, which was quite difficult to drive on in the last part. Then further up to the Kühtai saddle (2017 m).

The way led us down to Sellrain. At the moment there is a construction site there. But, just before the traffic lights, we turned left (no sign!), up a very narrow road.

This road is so narrow in the lower part that even for us with the motorbike it became very narrow once, when a car came towards us. We had to pull over to the far right and stop. Only then was it possible for the car to pass by. But the great view further up towards Innsbruck - deep down in the valley and far away - is even more beautiful! Via Oberperfuss and Zirl we reached Telfs. From there towards Seefeld and on to Leutasch we reached Mittenwald. There we visited a few friends and then drove on via Wallgau to Walchensee. The Walchensee is simply fantastic. Along the shore the road winds its way through many beautiful curves and offers wonderful views of the lake (see photo). If you have enough time, you should take a ride with the Herzogstand-Bahn at the beginning of the lake. The view from above is simply amazing!

The road over the Kesselberg was also nice to ride again. Due to some "crazy people" this track is closed from the north on weekends. And also today you can see motorcyclists again and again, who overtake one car after the other and drive rapidly uphill - this way the motorcyclists get into disrepute (unfortunately!)! The traffic was limited here and we quickly reached the Kochelsee. In Kochel we turned left to reach the Staffelsee via Murnau. The further way led us via Rottenbuch, Steingaden, Roßhaupten and Nesselwang to Wertach. Here we drove straight on (on the left we would have reached Oberjoch again) and finally arrived via Rettenberg back safe and sound in Sonthofen.

All in all a very nice day (about 350 km) with however - partly - a lot of traffic.
