Sonthofen - Gavia - Mortirolo

A demanding but grandiose tour!

Route description / Tour characteristics

The tour is very long (590 km) and with 16 passes, 5 of which are over 2000 m high, it is very demanding and demands high riding skills, good physical condition and concentration. It is therefore a challenge for the experienced alpine biker!
The tour offers everything that makes motorcycling in the Alps so special! Lots of curves, a spectacular high mountain scenery and above all it offers a lot of riding fun!

The tour leads from Sonthofen first over the Oberjoch 1178 m to the Tannheimer-Tal. Via the Gaichtpass 1093 m it goes down into the Lechtal, which you follow to the right. Via Stanzach you reach the turnoff to the Hahntennjoch 1909 m. After this always beautiful pass road, Imst is the next intermediate destination. From here you continue into the Pitztal valley until Wenns. From here the path turns right and leads up to the Pillerhöhe 1560 m - a stop at the Gacherblick with a great view down into the Inn valley is already obligatory! At Prutz the Inntal is reached again and the path turns left. Via the Finstermünzpass 1252 m and the Reschenpass 1519 m you reach the Reschensee and further on into the Vinschgau Valley. Then down the valley follow the signs "Schweiz" to the right and shortly after the Swiss border in Santa Maria the road to the Umbrailpass 2502 m branches off to the left. The Umbrailpass is mostly quite narrow and caution is advised in case of oncoming traffic. An extremely beautiful route that leads up to over 2500 m to the Swiss border - in between a 2 km long piece of natural road without asphalt, but which can be driven on with any road machine. Behind the top of the pass, there is a short stretch up to the Stilfserjoch 2763 m. Afterwards, go back and follow the route to Bormio. A winding route with a few narrow tunnels.
In Bormio finally turn left to the Gaviapass 2618 m. The route is still quite wide at first, but after a few small villages the spectacular part of the pass road follows. Relatively narrow and extremely curvy, the road winds up to over 2600 m. Towards the valley, the road seems to become even narrower and some small tunnels require caution. In some places it is quite scarce to pass by, even with a motorbike, when there is oncoming traffic!
In the valley, the tour then turns right towards Edolo and a few kilometres before the village turns right again towards Passo della Foppa (Mortirolo) 1852 m. The road up and especially after the pass down to Mazzo di Valtelina is still one of the "highlights of the Alps" for me !!!
In the valley the road turns left until Tirano. Here the ascent to the Berninapass 2330 m begins. The Beninapass is well developed and offers especially in the upper part (to Poschiavo) a lot of fun - simply a pleasure! Along the Lago Bianco and the fantastic high mountain scenery - especially the view of the Morteratsch glacier is impressive! - the route descends into the Engadine and on to St. Moritz. From here it's not far to the turn-off to the Julierpass 2284 m - the last 2000m of this route. The road is well developed, wide and quite clear. In addition the appropriate mountain scenery - motorcyclist's heart - what more do you want?
Until Tiefencastel the road goes downhill. Then up again to Lenzerheide 1547 m and on to Chur. The further route via Maienfeld, St. Luzisteig 713 m, Vaduz and Feldkirch to Dornbirn is a bit long, but after that it goes up to Bödele 1139 m and via Schwarzenberg, Egg, Lingenau and Hittisau to Balderschwang to the last pass of this long tour, the Riedbergpass 1420 m. Although it is partly quite bumpy, I like to ride it again and again. Afterwards it is not far back to Sonthofen and to the end of the tour.
