Salzburgerland 2010 - Ridereport

A tour with obstacles!

Pentecost 2010 - Forum Tour of the Alpine Bikers.
This time it should go to the Salzburger-Land, namely from 21 - 24.05. to Landhaus Maurer (http://www.landhaus-maurer.com/) in Wagrain-Moadörfl.
We had already been there in 2004 with a larger group and had made very good experiences.
Petra and I wanted to add another day before and after and so we wanted to go there from 20 - 25.05.
Soon some "alpine bikers" joined us - some also for 6 days.

Then nothing could go wrong anymore - or?

Pentecost was getting closer and closer and the weather did not promise anything good!

On top of that, there were health problems in the run-up to the tour, which ultimately led to the fact that we were not able to go to Wagrain with the others from Sonthofen on Thursday, 20.05. as intended!
Because on Wednesday morning I got an appointment for Friday for an outpatient procedure in the hospital.
Out of the mouse! Shh.... play!

Rudi ("katfisch") agreed at short notice to take over the duties of the tour guide - here again many thanks for this.

With a heavy heart Petra and I had to let the others go alone towards Wagrain!
Despite the bad weather it was very difficult for us!

After the appointment on Friday I should still take it easy, but the weather on Saturday was - in Sonthofen - too nice to stay at home.
I was already feeling very well again and so we decided to follow the others already that day!

From Sonthofen the way led us first to the Tannheimer Valley to the Haldensee.

Then we continued via Reutte and Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Wallgau and from there on the toll road to Vorderriß and the Sylvensteinsee.

Further along the Achensee to the pulpit bend above the Inn valley.
Here you have a wonderful view of the Inn valley and the Zillertal.

Via Zell am Ziller we went up to the Gerlospass.

Shortly before the pass summit, the old Gerlospass road branches off to the left.
The route is always beautiful, but you can see that it has seen better times! The asphalt is in very bad condition and careful driving is the order of the day.

Via Mittersil and St. Johann we finally reached the Landhaus Maurer in Wagrain, where the others had just returned from the day's tour.

On Pentecost Sunday the tour to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road was planned!

Günter ("gepe") from Salzburg was on time for the departure at Landhaus Maurer and made himself available as "local guide"!

Due to the unsettled weather, however, the "shortened" version was to be ridden over the Dientner saddle and then to the Grossglockner.

From Wagrain, the route first took the winding route down to St. Johann.
Then directly to Bischofswiesen and from there the enjoyable curves up to Mühlbach and on to the Dientner-Sattel. The route down to Dienten is quite bumpy in contrast to the previous section!
Via Saalfelden and Thumersbach at the Zeller-See we headed for the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße.
Behind Saalfelden I noticed that I still had to fight with health problems and unfortunately I had to say goodbye to the others at the toll station.
After a short break Petra and I drove back down into the valley and to St. Johann.
Between St. Johann and Wagrain we allowed ourselves a short detour to the Hahnbaumalm (signposted). The path leads about 4 km single-lane steeply uphill. About 400 m before the alp the asphalt stops and the path leads back downhill to the alp. Since my motorbike is only suitable for gravel to a very limited extent, we turned back here - but we still had a wonderful view of St. Johann and the Pongau - and drove on to the pension.

In the evening we sat together in a comfortable round in the opposite restaurant.

Pentecost Monday - for some the day of return!

First there was the obligatory group photo

Then we said goodbye to the "homecomers".

Markus, Alfred and Heidi as well as Petra and me wanted to go - with now wonderful weather - the tour "into the Salzkammergut".

So first we went via Altenmarkt and Eben to the Lammer Valley.
Here we were already spoiled by some nice curve combinations and the landscape!

Via St. Martin and Gosau the tour led us first to the Hallstätter-See - a scenic pleasure!

After this photo stop we drove directly to Hallstatt and had a good look at this picturesque place!

After this detour we continued on to Bad Aussee and over the Pötschen Pass in the direction of Bad Goisern. On the descent from the pass there is another magnificent view of the Hallstätter-See.

The next intermediate destination was the Traunsee.
Right at the beginning, the whole beauty of this gem is revealed.

After the lunch break at the local Gasthof Urz'n we continued our trip in the direction of Attersee.
Also a scenic pleasure!

Further on we went to the Mondsee and the Wolfgangsee

Afterwards we left the lakes of the Salzkammergut and turned right in Strobl to the Postalm Road.
At the toll station we unfortunately had to realize that the toll of 3,50 € for the motorcycle only includes the vehicle and the driver and the pillion rider has to pay an additional 3,50 €! Annoying!!!

Up on the Postalm Road we had a coffee break.

Afterwards we went downhill with beautiful views of the Dachstein- and the Tennengebirge

The further way led us then directly via Golling, the pass Lueg, Werfen, Bischofshofen and St. Johann back to Wagrain.

During a comfortable dinner we could process the impressions of the day.

On Tuesday the last passengers said goodbye to us and drove home.

On this day Petra and I wanted to go to the Königssee (including a boat trip to St. Bartholomä) and to the Rossfeldhöhenstrasse.

After the trip down to St. Johann and on to Bischofshofen we stopped for a short photo stop just before Werfen:

Over the pass Lueg and Golling we drove on to Hallein.
Here a nice road branches off behind the town centre up to Bad Dürrnberg and from there to Oberau and Berchtesgaden.

Then we reached the Königssee and enjoyed the boat trip and the walk in the area of St. Bartholomä.

After the return to Königssee (village) we drove up to the Rossfeldhöhenstrasse.
With the beautiful weather we could really enjoy the wonderful landscape and the deep views!

From there we went back via Bad Dürrnberg and Hallein to Golling.
Here we turned off towards Abtenau and drove through the Lammertal back to Wagrain.

Although we were on our own - a wonderful day!

Because of the bad weather forecast for the next days we decided to go home as well!

We said goodbye to the friendly Maurer couple and thanked them once again on behalf of all for the warm welcome and good accommodation as well as the great breakfast buffet!

The journey back home was without rain, only along the Achensee and later behind Lermoos it rained heavily for a short time - but after that everything was dry again.

But on the last 50 km from Reutte to Sonthofen we had the "destiny". Heavy rain accompanied us on this stretch - shit happens!

Finally a photo of the Sylvensteinsee, which impressed us on the way back with a wonderful mirror image!

Conclusions:

All in all it was a successful trip - despite the initial difficulties and the partly bad weather!
It was a lot of fun and we are already looking forward to the Pentecost tour next year!

Many thanks to all the riders for the great cooperation and the nice conversations!
